Well, I set up camp early because there was a momentary break in the weather—rain that is—lots of it. It started just before I got down to McKenzie Pass. It got heavy right after I got my water cache. I actually huddled in the bathroom at the observatory for awhile hoping it would blow through quickly. It did not. Back out on the lava I went. The rain actually let up for about 30 minutes, then it poured. I thought about bailing for Sisters, but there was no cell service to check for rooms though. I could have ended up homeless on the streets of Sisters tonight. That wouldn’t have been any fun either.
The rain actually let up as I was checking for possible campsites just north of Yapoah Crater at about mile 1976. So I guess I did about 14 or 15 miles which isn’t bad considering I spent a lot of time huddled under trees. Right after setting up the tent the nice, warm sun came out for an hour or so and helped dry things out. Then it went away and we are socked in with blowing mist. Fellow hikers here are saying it’s supposed to be “nice” tomorrow. We shall see. The views up on Belknap were really nice but the wind was howling just before the rain hit. Good times. Lots of wet hikers on the trail!
