Wow, last night was ugly! It’s a good thing I had a good wind break in camp cause it was howling all night long. When it wasn’t raining, it was blowing mist. It was still blowing mist after first light, but around 7am I think is when glimpses of the sun first showed up. That’s when I was finally brave enough to get out of my leaky tent. I spent the next couple hours drying out my tent and having some breakfast in between. Finally I got on the trail around 9:45am. It turned out to be a beautiful day—mostly sunny with some misty clouds coming off the Sisters.
The scenery was fantastic as always. I took a long lunch break to do some more gear drying in the sun since I figured I would roll into camp late. I was right. I’m camped 20 feet from the trail at the very south end of the Wickiup Plain. I think I did about 18 miles today—pretty good for the late start. I even had time for a quick dip in the pond by Separation Creek. The temperature was perfect. Then I started hiking through more burn. It was off and on all the way to the start of the Wickiup Plain. It looked like it went pretty high up on the mountain too.
It should be an easy day out to Elk Lake tomorrow—only about 8 miles or so.
